Tilling disturbs the soil structure, exposing organic matter to air. This accelerates the decomposition process, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere. Cover crops absorb additional CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and roots. Using more manure likely decreases your synthetic fertilizer use and adds organic matter to the soil, improving its carbon sequestration capacity.

The production of fertilizer generates significant carbon emissions. Applying fertilizer then release N2O into the atmosphere which is a potent greenhouse gas. The application process also burns fuel oil.

Nitrogen Technology


Practices such as 4R (Right Time, Right Place, Right Form, Right Rate) or Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer use can reduce carbon emissions.

Select '4R' if no single nitrogen application includes 75%+ of all nitrogen applied to that field for that season.

Select 'Enhanced Efficiency Farming' if 50+% of all units of N applied to the field were in a mix which included a stabilizer, or in the form of something like ESN.

Otherwise, select 'Business As Usual'.
